A kangaroo mid-bound in bold black ink, all raw energy and open country. Framed original from Running Duck Studio.

About This Piece

There is a split second in a kangaroo’s bound where the whole animal hangs in the air, tail streaming, hind legs folded for the next push. Country Freedom holds that second still. The kangaroo crosses the page in deep black ink, head set on somewhere well past the edge of the paper, and the white space around it does the work of open ground and big sky. Nothing is fussed over or filled in. The animal reads as pure momentum, which is exactly how you meet one in the paddock: a grey shape at the fence line one moment, gone through the timber the next.

The piece is built from a handful of committed brushstrokes. A loaded brush lays down the weight of the body, then drags dry across the paper so the bristles split and the stroke breaks into streaks of speed along the tail and legs. Flicked ink scatters off the main gesture like kicked dust. Ink allows no second attempt, so every mark you see was made once and left alone. That discipline is where the energy comes from. Where a tighter rendering would pin the kangaroo to the page, this loose, fast brushwork lets it keep moving every time you look at it.

From the Studio

Country Freedom was painted at Running Duck Studio in rural Queensland, where kangaroos are not a motif but a daily sight, grazing at first light and bolting when the dogs get wind of them. That familiarity shows in the drawing. The proportions are right without being laboured, the posture is caught at the believable point of the leap, and the whole thing carries the matter-of-fact affection of someone who watches these animals often. It belongs to the long tradition of ink painters chasing an animal’s character in as few strokes as possible, given an unmistakably Australian subject.

Framed and ready to hang, the piece works hard in a room. Black ink on white paper sits comfortably against any palette, in a hallway, above a desk, or as the quiet anchor of a lounge wall. It suits collectors of Australian wildlife art, anyone who grew up with roos on the back fence, and anyone who simply wants a piece with genuine movement in it rather than a still portrait.
