Hand-inked woman with a large afro drifting weightless in black ink and soft grey wash, calm in motion.

About This Piece

Floating on Air is the final piece in the Extraordinary Within the Ordinary set of three, hand-inked in my studio at Dayboro, Queensland. A woman with a large afro drifts across the page, her figure sketched in loose, confident black strokes over a soft grey wash. Nothing holds her down. Her arms trail like ribbons caught in a warm breeze and her hair opens into a halo of ink that seems to carry its own weather. She is not going anywhere in particular, and that is the point. The drawing invites you to stop beside her, suspended between one breath and the next.

The piece began as water and pigment. A wet grey wash went down first, pushed across the paper until it settled into gentle clouds of tone. Once the sheet had dried, the figure was drawn directly in black ink with a brush, no pencil guide underneath, so every line had to land true the first time. You can see where the brush moved fast through the sweep of an arm, where it slowed and pooled at the curve of a shoulder, and where a stroke lifts away to let the grey beneath show through. That looseness is deliberate. It keeps the woman in motion, never quite pinned to the page.

The Extraordinary Within the Ordinary set is about the quiet moments most of us walk straight past. A pause at the kitchen window. The few seconds after you close your eyes in the sun. Floating on Air sits inside one of those moments and stretches it out. In black and grey there is nowhere for the eye to hide, so the feeling has to come from the gesture itself: the tilt of her head, the reach of her hands, the hair lifting as if gravity forgot her for a while. Stillness, this drawing suggests, is not empty. There is a whole weather system moving inside it.

This is the original artwork, not a print, and it arrives framed and ready to hang. Black and white work settles easily into almost any room, whether the walls around it are bold or bare, and this piece holds its own from across the room while rewarding a closer look. It belongs to the Vintage Life Collection at Running Duck Studio, drawn, finished and framed here in Dayboro. When it leaves the studio, the set of three is complete and closed. There will not be another.
