A girl races her wide-eyed cat in a pram in this original black ink drawing, all flying splatter and joy.
Some cats tolerate the pram. This one has clearly decided to commit. Fur Baby Express is an original black ink drawing of a young girl at full sprint, pushing her fur baby along in a pram while motion streaks and flying ink trail out behind them. The cat is all enormous eyes and flattened ears, paws braced on the rim, holding on for the ride of its life. You can almost hear the wheels rattling over the path and the girl laughing as she runs. It is a small story every pet household knows, the way children fold their animals into every game, whether the animal agreed to it or not.
The piece is worked in black ink with a brush, and the marks carry the same energy as the scene. Long, loaded brushstrokes describe the girl’s flying hair and the forward lean of her body, while quick flicks and scattered droplets suggest gravel kicked up behind the wheels. The splatter is not decoration added afterwards. It was thrown at speed as the drawing was made, so the medium itself moves the way the subject does. Ink is an unforgiving medium. There is no rubbing out a line once it lands, so every stroke here was committed at full tilt, much like the girl herself. Around the figures the paper is left open and quiet, which keeps your eye on the chase and gives all that black ink somewhere to breathe.
What holds it together is affection. The cat’s wide eyes sit somewhere between alarm and complete trust, and the girl’s grin makes it plain she has no intention of slowing down. Anyone who has watched a child adopt an animal as a sibling will recognise the moment straight away. It hangs happily in a child’s bedroom, a nursery or a hallway, and it tends to make visitors laugh before they have quite worked out why. For a house with a much-loved cat, it is less a picture than a portrait of daily life.
Fur Baby Express was drawn by hand at Running Duck Studio in Dayboro, Queensland, in the hills north of Brisbane, where most work at the drawing board happens under the supervision of at least one resident animal. It is a one-off original, not a print, and it arrives framed and ready to hang, so the race can start on your wall the day it lands.
