Love My Country – Indigenous

Through expressive ink lines and soft washes, this portrait reflects a deep connection to land, heritage, and identity. It celebrates the wisdom, resilience, and stories carried by those whose lives are shaped by country and culture.

In this work, I sought to capture more than a portrait; I wanted to convey a presence. The weathered face, thoughtful gaze, and broad-brimmed hat speak of a life shaped by connection to land, culture, and memory. Through expressive ink lines and soft tonal washes, I aimed to suggest the stories carried within a person rather than define them, allowing the viewer to engage with the emotions and experiences that lie beneath the surface.

The title, Love My Country, reflects a deep respect for belonging—both to place and to heritage. It speaks to the enduring relationship between people and the landscapes that shape their identity, reminding us that country is more than geography; it is history, community, knowledge, and spirit. By leaving areas unresolved and fluid, the work acknowledges that identity is not fixed but continuously shaped by the stories we inherit and the connections we nurture throughout our lives.

This piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and consider the wisdom that comes from living in harmony with the land and honouring the generations who have walked it before us.
