Vulnerable begins with a single standing form on an empty sheet of paper, its shoulders slight, its legs thinned to little more than ink lines. Where a face should sit, the pen instead lets go, and dark strokes scatter upward and outward like hair caught in a gust that never settles. There is no expression to read, no eyes to meet, only the suggestion of movement in a moment that otherwise holds completely still. Splatters of ink sit scattered across the white ground, small and uneven, the kind of marks a hand makes when it is working fast and does not stop to correct itself. The economy of line is deliberate, every mark left on the page had to matter, because there was so little else to hide behind.
This piece came out of the long stretch of lockdown, when isolation stopped being a phase and started to feel like a fixed condition. Working from a studio in Dayboro, Queensland, the artist found the usual habits of drawing, careful shading, considered composition, gave way to something rawer. The faceless figure was not planned in advance, it appeared because a face felt like too much to commit to on days when identity itself seemed to blur at the edges. The ink was allowed to run and spatter rather than being contained, echoing the unpredictability of those months, when plans changed overnight and the news arrived faster than anyone could sit with it.
What remains is a figure that could be anyone, standing anywhere, waiting for something it cannot name. It is not a portrait of despair so much as an honest record of feeling exposed, stripped of the usual social armour that gets a person through a normal day. Viewers who lived through the same lockdowns tend to recognise something in the stance before they can explain why. That recognition, quiet and a little uncomfortable, is the point of the piece. The drawing does not try to resolve the feeling it captures, it simply holds it still long enough to be looked at properly.
