Crazy Days

An emu in full stride, caught in black ink splatters and loose brushwork. Original framed Australian wildlife art.

About This Piece

Crazy Days is what happens when an emu refuses to hold still. The bird charges across the paper from right to left, neck stretched forward, legs flung out mid-stride, and the ink goes with it. Loose, sweeping brush strokes describe the shaggy mass of its body while flicks and splatters of black ink scatter around the feet and tail, like dust kicked up on a dry track. There is nothing careful or contained about it. The drawing feels fast because it was made fast, each mark laid down with the brush still moving.

Anyone who has watched an emu run knows the strange comedy of it. The body stays weirdly level while the legs do something between a sprint and a stumble, and the whole bird looks like it is being chased by an idea it just had. That is the moment this ink study holds onto. The wet-brushed strokes pool and feather at their edges, the dry-brushed passages drag and break across the paper’s tooth, and the white space around the bird does as much work as the ink itself. It gives the emu room to run.

The piece comes from Running Duck Studio in Queensland, where the work leans into gesture rather than fine detail. Ink is an unforgiving medium. There is no going back over a line, no lifting a splatter once it lands, so every drawing is a single committed performance. In Crazy Days you can read that commitment in the confidence of the long neck stroke and the abandon of the splatter work around the legs. It is a portrait of movement more than a portrait of a bird.

On a wall, this drawing brings energy without noise. The black and white palette sits comfortably in almost any room, from a hallway that needs a jolt of life to a study that takes itself a bit too seriously. It suits collectors of contemporary ink work, lovers of Australian birds, and anyone whose week occasionally feels like an emu at full tilt. This is an original, not a print. There is exactly one Crazy Days, and the splatters will never fall the same way twice.
