Two surfers head for the waves in this original black ink artwork, full of salt air, wind and easy movement.

About This Piece

Two surfers, boards tucked under their arms, stride towards the water with the easy purpose of people who know exactly where they want to be. Beach’n Days catches the moment before the first wave, when the sand is still cool underfoot and the whole morning stretches out ahead. There is wind in their hair, salt on the breeze, and not a single worry between them. You can almost hear it: the hiss of whitewater somewhere past the edge of the paper, a shouted joke carried off by the onshore, bare feet finding the firm sand near the tideline.

The piece is painted in black ink on white, and the medium does all the talking. A handful of loose, confident brushstrokes describe each figure, while flicks and splatters of ink scatter around them like spray off a breaking wave. Nothing here is overworked. Every stroke was laid down fast and left alone, so the energy of the brush stays alive in the finished work. Where the ink runs dry you can feel the glare of morning light on wet sand. Where it pools, there is the dark weight of a wetsuit still damp from yesterday.

This is deliberately not a portrait of two particular people. Their faces are barely suggested, their bodies caught mid stride, because the artwork is really about what happens between them: the friendship, the shared anticipation, the unspoken agreement that today is a day for the water and nothing else. Anyone who has walked down a beach track at dawn with a mate and a board will recognise the feeling straight away. It is the moment life gets simple.

The Studio

Beach’n Days was painted at Running Duck Studio in South East Queensland, where the surf beaches of the coast are never far from mind. The gestural ink style is a signature of the studio: quick, expressive drawings that trust the first mark rather than polishing it away. The work arrives framed and ready to hang, and its bold black and white palette sits comfortably in coastal homes, hallways, bathrooms and beach houses alike. At 8am or 8pm, in full sun or lamplight, the ink keeps its punch.
