A playful baby elephant painted in soft grey watercolour and gentle ink lines, full of tender, mischievous charm.

About This Piece

There is a moment, just before a baby elephant decides to be mischievous, when the whole body seems to grin. That is the moment caught here. One small elephant stands square on the paper, trunk lifted like a hand raised in class, ears out, eyes bright with the kind of gentle cheek only very young animals have. The palette is quiet, soft grey washes that pool and fade into a clean white background, so nothing distracts from that raised trunk and those tender eyes. It is a simple composition, and that simplicity is exactly why it works. You look at it and you smile back. It happens almost every time.

The piece is built in two passes. First come the watercolour washes, laid onto damp paper so the grey pigment blooms and settles the way dust settles on a river bank. The rounded belly and heavy little legs take shape from these soft pools of tone, darker where shadow gathers under the chin and along the flank, barely there where the light lands on the forehead. Once the paper dries, ink outlines go on quickly and with a light hand. They catch the flap of an ear, the wrinkle of a knee, the happy curl of that trunk, without ever hardening into a cartoon. The white of the paper does the rest of the work, giving the little one room to breathe.

The painting was made at Running Duck Studio in Dayboro, Queensland, where the work happens surrounded by paddocks, birdsong and the occasional actual duck. It belongs to the studio’s Endangered Animals collection, a series painted for creatures whose futures are not guaranteed, and elephants sit near the top of that list. Somewhere between the soft washes and the raised trunk, the piece asks a quiet question: what would we lose if animals like this one were gone? It never preaches. It simply makes you fond of one small elephant, which is usually how caring starts.

This is an artwork that settles happily into family life. Hang it above a cot and it becomes the first painting a child ever studies. Put it in a hallway and it greets everyone who walks past, trunk up, all cheer. It suits a nursery, a kids room, a reading corner, or the desk of anyone who needs a reason to soften during the workday. As a gift for new parents or for an elephant lover, it carries real feeling without a hint of kitsch. One adorable baby elephant, ready to move in.
