A horse caught mid-turn in bold black ink, all splatter and sweep, painted by hand on white.
Turbulence is an original ink painting of a horse caught in the act of turning, head swung round, mane thrown, the whole animal alive on the page. The figure is built from a handful of decisive strokes: a loaded brush dragged fast across white paper, leaving crisp black where the ink pooled, and broken, feathered grey where the bristles ran dry. Splatters scatter off the main gesture like mud kicked from hooves. Stand close and you can read the speed of every single mark. Step back and those same marks resolve into muscle, weight and breath.
Ink rewards nerve. There is no underdrawing to lean on and no way to lift a mark once it lands, so every stroke in Turbulence was committed in one pass, the wet brush moving at the pace of the animal it describes. The dry-brush passages, where the bristles skip and stutter across the paper, carry the rough texture of a working horse’s coat. The splatter was flicked rather than placed, letting chance finish what the hand began. That mix of control and surrender is the heart of the piece: the horse holds its shape while everything around it flies apart.
The title does the honest work of naming what the painting is about. Turbulence began at Running Duck Studio in Dayboro, a small town in the hills north of Brisbane where horses are as much a part of the landscape as the timber and the rain. Out here you watch them stand calm in wild weather, and that image sat behind every brushstroke. The horse in this painting is not fleeing the storm of marks around it. It is turning into them, ears forward, reading the chaos the way animals do, with instinct rather than fear. Anyone who has had to keep their feet while life pulled in every direction will recognise the posture.
In monochrome, the work sits comfortably in almost any room, from a modern hallway to a timber-lined study, and it arrives framed and ready to hang.
