Expressive black ink artwork of a trusting dog riding the bow of a rowboat while its companion rows behind.

About This Piece

Full Confidence catches a moment every dog owner will recognise. The dog has claimed the best seat in the boat, right at the bow, facing forward into open water, and has left the actual rowing entirely to its human. It sits tall and settled, ears up, weight easy, while a long-haired figure works the oars behind it. The dog never once looks back. It does not need to. That single detail carries the whole story, because a dog only rides like that when years of shared mornings, wet paws and quiet company have taught it exactly who is holding the oars, and that they have never let it down.

The piece is worked in black ink with loose, gestural brushwork, each stroke laid down fast and left alone. Ink is an honest medium. It records hesitation just as clearly as it records certainty, so the drawing had to be made the way the dog rides, without second thoughts. In places the brush drags nearly dry across the paper, catching its texture like light breaking on chop. In others the ink pools dark and wet where the little boat sits low in the water. A few sweeping lines stand in for the pull of the current, and the open space around the boat does the rest, giving the pair the whole page to travel across.

Full Confidence was painted at Running Duck Studio in Dayboro, Queensland, where farm dams, creek crossings and dogs riding along in whatever happens to be moving are ordinary parts of country life. This is not a picture of a grand voyage. It is about the everyday partnership between a person and an animal, the kind you see on utes, horse floats and tinnies all over rural Australia, distilled here into a few dozen brush strokes. The simplified forms keep the focus on the feeling: the forward lean of the dog, the steady rhythm of the rower, two travellers comfortable enough with each other that neither needs to say a thing.

Hung in a hallway, a child’s room or beside the back door where the leads live, this artwork reads a little differently every time you pass it. Some days it is about adventure. Most days it is about trust, and the quiet strength of knowing you never have to cross the water alone. For anyone who has ever been trusted this completely by an animal, and anyone still working on earning it, this one will feel familiar.
