Two women in long Edwardian dresses and wide bonnets walk the shoreline, a small child at each hand. Their skirts press back against their legs, ribbons lift from hat brims, and the whole group leans gently into the sea breeze. Nothing about the scene is posed. You can almost hear it: gulls overhead, the hiss of a retreating wave, a child asking how much further. Seaside Elegance holds that small, ordinary moment still, the kind of outing that filled family albums a century ago and somehow still feels familiar today.
The drawing is worked in black ink with a soft grey wash on paper. The line work is loose and gestural, so a few confident strokes describe a sleeve, a hem, the tilt of a bonnet, and the white of the page does the rest. The grey wash floats over the figures in thin, watery layers, suggesting overcast coastal light and damp sand without ever pinning the scene down. It is a deliberately quick, expressive way of drawing. Wet ink does not wait, so every mark had to be decided in the moment, and that urgency is what gives the figures their sense of movement and wind.
The piece was drawn at Running Duck Studio in Dayboro, Queensland, and belongs to the Vintage Life Collection, a series that looks back at everyday life from earlier generations: the outings, the errands, the quiet rituals that rarely made it into formal portraits. Seaside Elegance sits at the gentler end of that series. It suits collectors of figurative and coastal art, and it works especially well in hallways, bedrooms and reading corners where a quieter piece can be lived with rather than glanced at.
