Power & Perception

Price range: $239.00 through $259.00

Expressive black ink drawing of a horse and small dog, a quiet study of trust, power and instinct.

About This Piece

Power & Perception holds a single suspended moment: a horse, all height and muscle, pauses over a small dog lying at its feet. The dog gazes up, still and open. The horse hesitates. Neither animal moves, yet the whole drawing feels charged, as if one breath from either of them could tip the balance. It is the kind of encounter you might catch in a paddock at dusk, gone before you can name it, and the drawing keeps it alive on the page in stark black and white.

The work is drawn in black ink on a clean white ground, built up with sweeping dry-brush strokes that leave rough, broken edges where the bristles drag almost empty across the surface. You can read the speed of the hand in every mark. The horse’s neck and shoulder carry the heaviest ink, dense and wet, while the legs taper into lighter, faster gestures. Scattered ink splatter flicks outward from the main forms, a record of the physical energy of the drawing process rather than a decorative afterthought. Nothing is smoothed over or corrected. The texture is the point: coarse, immediate and honest.

Beneath the surface, the piece asks a harder question. The horse stands for strength and authority, the dog for submission and appeal, and the pause between them is where the meaning lives. Do we extend trust on instinct, or withhold it because experience has taught us to be careful? In a world thick with competing claims and quiet manipulation, that hesitation feels very familiar. The drawing does not answer for you. It simply holds the two animals in place and lets you decide which one you recognise as yourself.

From the Studio

This is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork from Running Duck Studio in Dayboro, Queensland, drawn by hand in the hills north of Brisbane where horses and working dogs are part of daily life. That familiarity shows in the anatomy and the body language, observed rather than imagined. The drawing arrives framed and ready to hang, and its restrained black-and-white palette sits comfortably in a hallway, study or living room without competing with the space around it. Because every stroke was laid down once and left alone, no reproduction carries the same texture; this is the only one there is.
