Original ink sketch of a mother orangutan and her baby asleep together, drawn in loose, tender strokes.
There is a particular stillness that settles over an orangutan mother once her baby finally drops off to sleep, and Sleepy Moments holds onto exactly that. Two figures rest close together, the smaller head nestled against the larger one, and everything else falls away. The pose is simple, almost ordinary, which is what makes it land. This is not a wild animal doing something dramatic. It is a quiet domestic scene that happens to belong to one of the most endangered great apes on earth, and the tenderness reads instantly whether you know the species or not.
The drawing is worked in black pigment ink on paper, and it keeps the energy of a sketch rather than the polish of a laboured study. Loose, gestural strokes carry the weight of the two bodies, heavy where the forms press together and lighter where the paper is left to breathe. A scatter of fine ink splatter softens the edges and lends the piece a sense of warmth and movement, like fur caught mid-breath. The black and white palette does the emotional work here. With no colour to lean on, the whole scene rests on line, contrast and gesture, and the eye keeps returning to the point where the two heads meet.
Danielle B Latta drew Sleepy Moments at her home studio in Dayboro, Queensland, a small town tucked into the foothills northwest of Brisbane where the days move slowly and the bush comes right up to the back fence. That unhurried setting shows in the work. Nothing about this drawing feels rushed, yet nothing feels overworked either. Danielle draws by hand, in ink, without an undo button, and the confidence of each stroke is part of what you are buying. This is a one of a kind original, not a print, and it belongs to her Endangered Animals collection, a body of work devoted to the creatures we stand to lose.
Sleepy Moments suits a bedroom, a nursery or any quiet corner of the house where you want something gentle on the wall. It makes a thoughtful gift for a new mother, for anyone who loves primates, or for someone who simply responds to the sight of two creatures utterly at ease with each other. Hang it where the morning light falls and the ink work rewards a close look, from the boldest sweep of the shoulders down to the finest fleck of splatter.
