A Kookaburra holds fast in the wind, drawn in loose black ink strokes and splatter on a gum branch.
Gumtree Winds catches a Laughing Kookaburra at the exact moment the weather turns. The bird grips its gum branch, feathers streaming sideways, while the air itself seems to move across the paper. Ink splatter trails off the wing line like leaves torn loose in a gust, and the branch flexes under the strain. Stand with it for a moment and you can almost hear the scene: the hiss of wind through eucalyptus leaves, the creak of old timber, and somewhere behind it all, that unmistakable cackle waiting to break out.
The drawing is built from loose, gestural strokes of black ink, laid down quickly and left alone. Ink rewards decisiveness. Once a stroke touches the paper it stays, so every mark in this piece is a committed one, from the heavy pull of the branch to the dry, feathered lines that give the Kookaburra its ruffled chest. The splatter is not an accident tidied up afterwards. It is the wind itself, flicked from the brush in the same breath as the feathers it disturbs. What remains on the page is a record of movement, both the bird’s and the hand that drew it. A tighter, more careful rendering would have flattened the gust right out of the picture, so the looseness is the whole point.
Kookaburras are the great sitters of the Australian bush. They choose a branch, settle in, and watch the world with a patience most of us have lost. This one is doing exactly that, except the world refuses to sit still around it. That contrast is the heart of the piece: a calm, watchful bird holding its ground while everything else rushes past. Anyone who has stood under a gum tree on a blustery afternoon, whether in a backyard or out on a bush track, will recognise the feeling. The canopy roars, the leaves fly, and the kookaburra simply grips a little harder and waits it out.
Because Gumtree Winds is an original artwork, the piece on your wall is the very sheet that came off the drawing board, splatter and all. It arrives framed and ready to hang. The monochrome palette settles easily among other works or holds a wall on its own, and it suits a hallway that needs a bit of energy, a study that wants a window into the bush, or any home that keeps an ear out for that first laugh at dawn.
