Wrestling with lions

Ever found yourself locked in a gaze with a creature so majestic, it feels like stepping into a timeless dance?

That’s me every time I’m before my canvas, wrestling with the spirit of a lion through my ink. It’s not just a drawing; it’s an encounter, a dance of shadows and light, where every line tells a story of raw power and regal grace.

Join me on this artistic safari, as we explore the hidden depths of these noble beasts, captured in striking black and white.

Finding the most powerful image

Observing Dean Schneider’s intimate interactions with lions has opened a new window of inspiration for me. It’s not just about the physical proximity; it’s the emotional connection he shares with these majestic creatures.

This bond transcends the usual barriers between human and beast, revealing a myriad of expressions and postures that are rarely seen. Every movement and moment shared between them is a story waiting to be told in ink.

I have resolved to rough out as many possibilities as time allows. Then, I can decide which of them fits the rest of the animal layouts. It will also mean that I will have heaps of smaller artworks to go with the exhibition.

In my studio, sketches sprawl across the walls, each a frozen moment of this unique human-lion bond. I’m not merely replicating these scenes; I’m interpreting them as I see them and feel them – where the raw power of the lion meets the delicate dance of human interaction. This process is both challenging and exhilarating, pushing me to capture the essence of these encounters in a way that’s authentic to my artistic voice.

As I rough out each possibility, a narrative starts to take shape.  Deciding which sketches will eventually become a final product is like choosing the leading characters for a play, each must play its part in the overarching theme of the endangered animals exhibition.

This approach also births an abundance of smaller artworks.

These pieces, while perhaps less imposing than the larger ones, hold their own charm and story. They are the glimpses, the subtle nuances of the lion’s majesty and the depth of their interaction with Dean.

Together, these artworks will populate the exhibition and offer more intimate, accessible pieces for those captivated by the lion’s allure.
